Where Spirits Walk

This forest is alive, to me,
Growing up above the sea.
Spirits walk here, I do too,
Stopping now and then to view
Lichen growing on the bark
Of some ancient tree and mark
How pale fungus spreads like plates
And down below,a ground squirrel waits
Until I move away to eat
The mushrooms, springing at his feet!

The breeze that's wandering with me,
Smells of earth and history.
It wasn't all that long ago,
No humans came here and I know
That wild eyes watch me, though unseen.
Dark, huddled shapes against the green,
Are ravens with their beady eyes,
Perched in tall trees that densely rise
To trap the fierce sea winds outside
And mute the turning of each tide!

To come here is to feel the past.
I hold the memories close and fast,
Of mossy floor and shadowed way.
Of giant ferns and birds that play
Among the trees and add their song
To that of nature, all day long!

Dear Joyce:

Thanks.  I don't live here, but I have visted this forest in Oregon a number of times, when staying at the coast. It left a lasting memory.
