Skipped Generation

My daddy was a farmer with
But little time to shirk
Or to spend his time just fishing.
He could never leave his work.

So that's why he didn't teach me
How to bait and hook a fish,
Though I think he would have liked to
If he could have had his wish.

But now my daddy's older
And retired from that old farm.
To spend his days now fishing
Doesn't do a bit of harm.

He takes his grandson with him
And they have a lot of fun.
I watch with love and envy
Wishing he'd fished with his son.

Dear Joyce,

Wonderful poem! I can surely relate to what you've written. My ex-husband had worked many hours on a graveyeard shift and was unable to spend much time with our children as they were growing up. Now that he is retired, he spends time playing with our grandchildren and loving every minute of it. Although they knew their father loved them, I'm sure my sons feel envious at times, wishing their father had done the same when they were young.

Love,
Patricia

Excellent thought. Sad, but, true.
I find I do some things with my grandkids that I "thought" I didn't have time with my own.

Thanks, Melton

Dear Joyce:

This is a nostalgic poem and very enjoyable to read.  It's too bad farmers have to work so hard, they don't have time to fish!

I have been offline since Monday with computer problems.

Dear Joyce

This poem of yours reminds me of the song, "Cats in the Cradle".

It used to be the farmers that were busy, but now if you look around you, it seems that nobody has any 'time' to spare.  Not even to smell the roses.

A wonderful poem for a 'wakeup' call.

I love the way you write about family and how important the little things are in life.
Such a super poem!
