Anniversary

July twenty on my calendar,
I can't believe it's true,
So many years have passed since I
Pledged marriage vows with you.

We stood with hands connected and
Our hearts completely fused;
Each knowing that the trust we gave
Would never be abused.

We flourished and the babies came
To make our lives complete.
There were triumphs and small trials,
But none we couldn't beat.

Almost our twenty-second year
Of a full life with you,
When Death with his relentless scythe
Cut my poor heart in two.

Now as this date brings memories
And some unbidden tears;
I thank God that he granted us
Those loving, too short years.
