Another World

I came upon a valley, deep
And wondered if some creatures sleep,
Where shadows never touched by light,
Can harbor secrets from our sight.
There was no way, that I could see,
To reach its floor judiciously.
If I went down, I must come back.
Rock climbing is a skill I lack.

I wandered on, perhaps a mile
And stopped to rest a little while.
The afternoon was growing late.
I camped there, thinking I would wait
Until the morning dawned, before,
Launching an all-out explore!

But sometime in the night I woke.
An ancient, mighty voice that spoke
From out the depths, froze every bone
With fear that I had never known.
I lay, so paralyzed with fright,
Nor closed my eyes, the rest of night.
Just listened to that spill of sound,
That seemed to shake the very ground!

With dawn, the terror died away.
I packed my things and made my way
Back to the trail I'd left behind.
There's mystery, that some might find,
But that abyss, I'd never dare,
Although there is a lost world there!

I'd have turned around and left too - as always a wonderful scribe.

Dear Joyce:  I wrote this after reading about the "Lost World" in Venezuela, near where Angel Falls is.  It really captured my imagination.

Dear Marge:  I had a feeling you'd like this. If we could go together, maybe we'd find out what made all that noise? Thanks.

This is so intense and so intriguing! I agree with Marge-loved the spill of sound. I love to lap up what the poets spill!

MiCheLLe:  Thanks!  It is a bit creepy, but I was so intrigued by an article I read about a valley in South America, that hasn't been totally explored. This was the result.

Dear Betty Lou

This poem reminds me of how we are afraid to reach into the depths of despair.  An 'unknown' territory we fear to tread.  Are we afraid of what we may find?

Thank you for sharing this one with us all here in PiP.

Dear Isobel:

Your interpretation of this poem is certainly valid!  It could be viewed that way.  It is about a place in Venezuela that is like no other place known and much of it remains unknown!

I think I would have been more foolish and explored more.. then ran away screaming into the night

I like the last interpetation of this.  Thank you for yet another wonderful read.
