That Fourth of July

That Fourth of July will always be
Embedded in my memory.
It started as many had before
With happy plans and fun in store.

Our children then were nearly grown
And they all had plans of their own.
Just one more office job to do
Before our day of just we two.

I left the house in full good cheer,
Leaving behind those held most dear.
Engrossed in work, I was alone,
Until I heard the jangling phone.

That one short call to change my life;
A widow now, not happy wife.
So now you know the reason why, I
Often cry....on the Fourth of July.

Dear Joyce:  I'm sure you are reliving that fateful day.  It is a very touching poem.

We lost our only grandson on July 2nd, 1980 and I know how it affects me every year.

Dear Joyce

My heart cries out for you and anyone who has had a loss.  I have been there too.  Not only do certain dates remind me but so do certain songs.

Dearest Joyce,

Your poem touched me very deeply!

My heart grieves for your loss as I blend my tears with yours. Only those who have lost a loved one can truly know the depth of sorrow one has to endure. Although my son Michael has been gone 8 years, I still feel the hollow inside as the date of his passing approaches. Just know that you are surrounded by love from all of us.

Love and hugs,
Patricia

Dear Joyce,

It's not the 4th, or near any holiday that I've lost people on.. closer to the 21rst of nearly every month.  I'm sorry that you had to feel the pain of losing someone on such a festive day, and even more sorry that it was your husband.

If you ever feel like talking, I'm here.

The poem itself is beautifully simple and heartbreaking.

Thank you for sharing it.
