The Graveyard She called us disrespectful, Momma did that yesterday When we told her of our secret place where we love to go and play. She said that we were naughty she just doesn’t understand, The fun in playing hide ’n seek and catch me if you can. What better place is there to hide than behind a marbled stone. Such loads of fun to chase around the beds of those unknown. We are very, very careful, never stepping on a grave, And other children in our town think we are very brave. We go there happy as can be, we laugh and dance and sing Performing for those spirits who on leafy tree boughs swing. We scrump delicious apples from an overhanging tree And we sit chomping happily my bestest friend and me. We creep quietly past the vicarage the vicar’s always there, Sitting by the window in his high-back leather chair. He knows without a doubt our favorite place to play, And disrespectful’s not a word that he would throw our way. One day we found a broken broom but with bristles fine Such luck ’twas the perfect size to brush away the grime.. What fun a scrubbing we did have, to add to our list of games To find those hidden markers and uncover long lost names. She has just talked to the vicar, Momma told us that today He said he knew of our secret place where we love to go and play. He said that we weren’t naughty she just had to understand, The fun in playing hide ’n seek and catch me if you can. |

How very very sweet. Reminds of James Whitcomb Riley. Love, Joyce |

I too enjoyed the story here, and the spirit(no pun intended) of it, that I take as its not disrespectful to play and have fun around the dead, but rather its respecting life and brevity perhaps. |

A celebration of happiness amid a yard full of tears.... This is a beautiful poem. It's good to be remind that not only the dead spent time in the graveyards. BWA |
