Oh dearest stranger do you know thee?
For thy heart knowest thee too well;
that in your very liking it longs to be,
and dreads the forecoming farewell.

Doth it seem strange that thou is loved,
for never before this time our likeness met,
nor upon the coming of it, spirits moved;
'cept for the coming of dark silhouette.

Is thou frightened of such a thing as this;
that thy heart may find security in love's embrace,
or uncertainty in such a stranger's kiss,
and the unknowing that lies behind his face?

Would the loving day be so unforgiving as thou,
if he knew anything less of the unloving night?
I have only to offer the solemness of this loving vow,
that all who has ever loved has loved at first sight!
