Etched in the illusion of time

0 posted 2003-09-29 10:38 PM

painting herself the rich maize
that bleeds from corn
on a cool autumn day

dripping down a country road
dust a crown for her
in French plaited yellow hair

eyes the color of bronzed sunsets
tangling a milkweed
around her tan silk fingers

will the fields miss a thousand cries
of blessed laughter
no more children
no more joy

after..

the rains came

she was gone.

child of pure sweetened summer
he made her fade into autumn
too soon

and now, my darling girl
plays chords of her haunting music
along the riverbanks
on brittle reeds

footprints sinking into the dirt
seem to last forever
perhaps they were sealed with her mother's tears

calico ribbon
tied to the fence post
keeping Hell
from her deepening grave

there will be no wind tonight

for we give back to the angels
what their songs give to us

my Ria.

For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.--"Romeo and Juliet"
