Where is Mars?

The scientists say Mars is near,
So every night the weather's clear,
I go outside to look around,
But it quite simply can't be found!
I've watched the moon and counted stars
And always wonder, where is Mars?
I've studied sky charts, most profound.
Chewed my pencil tip and frowned
Over all the calibrations
Tracking it through other nations!

Now, it should be southeast of me,
But empty space is all I see!
I dash outside at five o'clock.
Cool, morning air is such a shock
And though I scan from left to right,
That big, red planet's out of sight!
I've asked others, "Is it time?"
"Oh, go home and write some rhyme!"
They are tired of my queries.
Their reception of me varies.

Some are kind and understand
The rarity of what's at hand
And know we won't be here to see
When Mars, in it's trajectory,
Returns to favor earth a view,
As close as August orbits do!
There's few days left for me to find
This planet that preys on my mind.
I've begged The Fates remove the bars
That keep me asking, "Where is Mars?"

This is cute. It is nice to observe the sky and esp having someone beside you who know the name of each.

A nice piece of rhyming.  Mars really isnt that hard to find, its the big red one near the horizon at sundown, at least thats what it was last time I checked.  Thanks for sharing.

Eliza:  Thanks and you're right.  It is more fun to look at the night sky if you are with someone who knows the constellations.

Wesley:  Thanks. The problem here is that we live in a narrow valley and are surrounded by high timbered hills. Little sky visibility in any direction.  I know if I want to see Mars, I'll have to drive to a more open area.  I plan to do that on the evening of the 26th or 27th. I keep asking people if they've seen Mars, and this poem was as a result of that and some of their answers!

Nice rhyming about a pesky problem.  I can't find it either.  I have to go out on the road past all my trees to look and I still can't see it. I wish I could have my son show me.  He would get so excited about any phenomena in the sky and insist I see it.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Well, I guess I'm not the only one then, who hasn't seen that planet! I know I'll have to drive out of the foothills about 20 miles in order to see the southeast sky clearly and will do so, soon.
Thanks for your remarks.

BettyLou~
This is so clever~

I sure hope you all get the chance to see it.

We caught one tiny glimpse of it night before last ... and I'll sure be rubber-necking for it later in the month~

Hi Marge:  We will drive over to our son's, who is about 20 miles from us and a "flatlander!"  He has a great view from his place and a good telescope.  Probably go the 26th or 27th, as that's supposed to be when it is nearest to earth.  I was really disappointed in Halley's comet a few years ago and I am hoping Mars will be a better show!

Hi Betty Lou

We get the chance next week to try and catch a glimpse of Mars.  Andrew is in possession of my Dad's telescope so hopefully we might see it if we're lucky.

Take care......Sue

very cleverly done dear.... I'll have a good shot at seeing it on the 27th as we will be on the eastern shore at Ormond Beach, Fla.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

pegasus111:  Thanks for the nice comments. You will be in a perfect spot, I would think, to see Mars.  I am going to have to leave the mountains and find a more open area, which I plan on doing. Hope it's worth it!

This has been on my mind for days. I heard it will not be close again for another 284 years. (2287)Our great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren will see it. I am looking forward to this wonder of Gods for sure!

Shara Rose:  I hope you get to see Mars. We are driving out of the mountains where we live, to our sons. on the night of the 26th, as he lives in prairie country and has an unobstructed view of the sky. I'm looking forward to seeing and he has a good telescope, so that will be helpful. Thanks for commenting.

I found my little 60 power telescope after reading your poem and, yes, it's out there.  A little red around the edge. Nice to look at, but still no Martians.

Thanks, Melton

I love this - and I want to see Mars too... I guess I'll have to take a walk to the beach, eh?... Very cute poem indeed...

Melton:  Well, I'm so glad you got to see Mars!  I still haven't but will try for the night of the 26th or 27th.  Have to drive out of the mountains and hope to find an unencumbered view of the sky.

maggie: Thanks so much for your comments. We were lucky as the 26th and 27th of August, the smoke cleared and the skies, and we actually did see Mars, shining behind the trees.  Not a clear view, but we knew it was there!
