At his feet lie grass green turf
At his head lies cold stone
Beneath the ground his arms are crossed
He won't be going home

He fought dearly for our freedom
Followed what his heart said
Gave his all, tried his best
But now our soldier lies dead

With gun smoke in the air
And cannons firing all around
He shot his gun, loaded again
Refused to give an inch of ground

When he took a fatal bullet
He kneeled upon the ground
Looked up to see the stars and stripes
Said, "I hope I've done you proud"

To his family, we send our comfort
And honor his memory
None know the cost of freedom
Nearly as much as he

Thankyou unknown soldier
For everything you've done
You gave new meaning to our flag
May God be with you, son.

Beautifully written. It makes me wonder if war is worth all the death it causes- and for what! so sad.

Very touching.  Your choice of words and rhythem worked well.  Great work.

sometimes I get irritated at so many of our fellow americans who take this sacrifice so lightly.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

ummm... Pegasus, I wasn't trying to take it lightly.  I've lost to many people to wars..  It was just a thought that stuck in my head and wouldn't leave until I wrote it down.  I'm sorry if it offended you.

Angel. I think you misunderstood my comment. it wasn't intended for you. I think your piece more than does justice to our comrads in arms.
