Shadows and Stones

The shadows and the stones, I find,
Are all that life has left behind,
Of what was once a castle grand,
That overlooked pastoral land
And as I look, I seem to see,
The way this mansion used to be.

From every turret, pennants flew
Against a sky so deeply blue.
From every windowpane, the light,
Reflected from the sun;  at night,
The candles beckoned any eye,
From carriages a-passing by.

People's voices, laughter and song,
Filled the air the whole day long.
There must have been a lady fair,
Who welcomed all who traveled there
And too, a handsome lord to ride
Across the wooded countryside.

Now, no one even can recall
Who held this keep; who made it fall,
But buried deep, lie ancient bones,
Beneath the shadows and the stone.

A wonderful poem.  It is sad to think of how such monuments fall along with the people who inhabited them. Wonderful imagination you have.  Joyce

I like this very much, one of my favorites of yours I think. I love ruins and how they spark the imagination. Even the ruins of something far less grand than what you describe are interesting. Finding the clues left behind, asorbing the essence of what was.

Memories for some, imagination for others of yesterday’s “shadows and stones”. I loved your description.

Red_Feather:  Thank you and I'm glad this is a favorite of yours.  I totally agree about ruins or abandoned places. They are mysterious and steeped in history.  I lived in the high desert country of Nevada for a number of years and there were so many ghost towns and deserted mining operations. I found them fascinating.

passing shadows:

It does have a mournful air, so it isn't the mood you're in.  Thanks for reading some of my older pieces of poetry.
