The Dusky Ouzel Sings ( a ballade) October winds have brought a sudden chill. The color has been leaching from the sky. I watch the colored trees upon the hill And feel another year go quickly by. Yet as I see the autumn season die, I'm looking forward to the days next spring, When water birds will chorus as they fly And I will hear the dusky ouzel sing! For now, I'll relish fall and get my fill Of tangy air and hear the wild geese cry, As from the lake, they rise to turn and mill And form a "v" formation there on high. Each morning, in the swale, the white mists lie, Reminding me of flowers May will bring. I'll search to find Calypso orchids, shy And I will hear the dusky ouzel sing! The frosty nights, my tender plants will kill And in the wind, I hear a mournful sigh. Ice silences the voices of the rill. The shortest days are swiftly drawing nigh, For winter is intractable and sly. Though Indian summer gave us one last fling. But I can picture April, if I try And I will hear the dusky ouzel sing! Forever in my heart, that Lorelei, Sweet season, whose enchanting tunes will ring, Blots out October rains. The ground will dry And I will hear the dusky ouzel sing! I like this, though I might suggest: second verse, fourth line, "And fly a "v" formation there on high" ("form a "v" formation" trips me up) w.g. |

Dear Marge: Do you have ouzels in Florida? I confess I don't know what parts of the country they are in, except here, of course. I love their song! Thanks for your lovely comments! Betty Lou Hebert |
