THE GENTLE SON I had a son, A gentle son, Who never struck another. He was my boy, My only boy, I was a proud, proud mother. They sent my son, My gentle son, Off to fight a war. They killed my boy, My gentle boy Whom I shall see no more. I had a son. He's dead, my son, And I can have no other. He was my boy My pride and joy, And I am still His proud, proud mother. I wrote this for the Mothers ’of a Gentle Son’ during the Vietnam War. I be me BUT who does me be? |

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Das, this is so very heartaching, dearest friend, I'm so very sorry for your loss, I too have been very upset recently of all that's going on and seeing our kids taken from their parents to go to war is like "abduction" to me! (sad sigh) This is powerful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Das, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Very timely. I think we need to pray for sons and daughters in the military. Enjoyed this. |

Spirit, how much I pray no mothers or fathers will experience the pain of the death of a loved one from war. However, I fear the days ahead will be filled with many tears. Hugs, Marti Dwelling on the negative simply |

so sweet and so sad. I love th form... but most of all the words, very touching. Always, Alyssa - And so it was that time stood still - (blink, breathe, stand, fight) [This message has been edited by GG (03-05-2003 01:03 PM).] |

A very applicable poem I think even for today as many of us have "gentle sons" and daughters who are serving in the armed forces, but I do hope and pray that the outcome will be much different than what was described here in your poem. (Amen) Though this poem is very sad, it is still well written and still you get my vote my friend. God bless. -Bob |

You say you write of little truth, this is a true write that has hit many homes. I am sad too think that our future holds more killing of innocent children, our children. |

Yes of course, parents don't raise their son to go out and kill someone else's son...hopefully a solution other than war will prevail...James |

Very appropriate at this time. My vote is in. I'm a reader - not a writer. |

... And yet another vote from me for your very fine poem and for all of the 'gentle sons' who have passed and those who still remain strong and vibrant in the minds and hearts of their proud proud parents and all of the others who loved and appreciated them and their most noble sacrifices so very very much. -Bob |

this goes to show that a poem need not employ all these fancy literary devices to touch the reader |
