I sit like a mountain, unperturbed.
searching for myself, asking:
Who is this face that stays in the shadows,
wanting to come in, hesitating.

On a haunting starless night,
I stretch my hand out into the darkness,
grope in vain for someone to touch it.
But no one does. Nor do I welcome any.

Silence is a friend tonight. I need no other,
my thoughts the only company I keep
They flicker like stoked embers.
They glow and will not die.

I am content in my own world.
With the sky my dome, though dark
its summer’s warmth covers me
like a blanket, caressing, soothing.

I am a captive of my imagination
building sand castles that crumble
catching planes that never land.
An unknown force keeps pushing me.

I hope someday I get to know myself.
I’ll make peace with this familiar stranger,
view with no regrets the choices I made
as one whole tapestry I alone wove for myself.
