The Daily Wood

I have a charming Siamese cat,
Who daily, tries to show me that
He is consumed with gratitude
For shelter and his dish of food!
The way he does this is unique.
He scans the wood box, there to seek,
A tiny bit of wood, or two
And then he leaves them in plain view
Upon my bedspread, every day.
These wooden splinters, on display,
All tell me he appreciates
The pampered life he lives and rates
The services and comforts, good
And thanks me with his gifts of wood!

I love this, cats really do like to leave gifts.  I had two cats once who at night would leave gifts on my bedspread for me to wake up to in the morning, normally large lizards, very bloodied, very dead. It took me a while to figure out to keep them in and block the pet door. Your Siamese is obviously a far more genteel cat than mine were.

This is so sweet. I had a neighbour a few years back who had two black cats that used to love to leave me green beans from their garden..right there on my side porch. lol. Enjoyed. Chris

SPIRIT:  Toy is the first cat I've ever had that didn't leave totally repulsive offerings! It's such a nice change!  Thanks for your response and enjoyed hearing about your cats.

Chris:  Green beans are even better than wood!  How resourceful!  Thanks for reading. Glad you enjoyed the poem.

Betty,

Wood, now that is a new one. I had cats most of my life, but never did they give me a gift such as this. I too was only given the mice and other such creatures. Cats can be such silly animals.

Betty Lou, how delightful! Those little creatures are so precious, aren't they? My little guy used to "gift" me with a little mouse, from time to time but, my, how I still miss him!

Dear Betty,  What a charming gift from your kitty.  Mine never gives me anything, not even dead mice.  He thinks the gifts should go the other way.  But he is a lovely companion.  Love, Joyce

Denise:  Thanks for reading.  I have heard from a couple of people that their cats leave them unusual gifts too.  One person said they would bring her pods of green beans out of a neighbor's garden!  that tops pieces of wood!

Dear Joyce:  Cats are comforting to have around I think.  The Siamese is the first I've had and he certainly is different, but he is very loving! We have two others who are basically outside cats, and are not nearly as social as he is.

Hehe, lovely Betty. My cats bring us gifts as well.. I remember one particular time when little Miss brought us two baby sparrows at once: we managed to save one, and I fed it and kept it alive and happy for three days. But I think I starved it to death on the third morning, because I slept in until 11am - at 8am "Prices Slashed" was still cheeping (when my Dad got up to leave for work..) but when I found him, he was stone dead.
I wrote a poem about it actually, on the poetry course i've just been on. ^^

Thanks for the delightful read!!

Lynne:  Thanks for your reply to this poem.  Sorry your atempt to raise a baby sparrow didn't succeed.  It's hard to raise baby wild creatures.  We have tried a couple of times with baby rabbits and birds that we have found fallen out of their nests.  I did manage to raise one rabbit out of a littler of 4, whose mother had been killed. I fed it baby formula and cereal and it made it until we turned it back into the wild, when it was old enough.

Ok, I found this one today. Remember the mouse problem? Some one suggested a cat.  I didn't know about the offerings thing.  Well, I didn't get the kitty and perhaps that was good I didn't.
The poem was informative and adorable as always. Love, Barb

Barb:  I think I suggested a cat, actually! I think you said you have allergies?  I'm glad you liked this.  There's something special about a cat who brings you splinters of wood every day.  I don't know what he'd do if we didn't have a wood pile!!

Hi Betty.  It was fun to read this again.  I had a little kitty who brought a bird in one day and when I took it away from her she climbed a curtain and swatted some figurines off a  nearby shelf.  Love. Joyce

Hi Trillium

A lovely poem and such a wonderous cat you have.  I'm not sure about the wood, but yes, it is better than dead mice.  It reminds me of a white cat I had when I was a child.  It's name was Lucky.  Actually, I am not quite sure whether he knew that he was a cat.  Whenever any strays (cat or dog) came into our yard, I used to say to him.  Sick em' (get them) Lucky.  He would chase them out of the yard.

Isobel.

Isobel:  Toy is a wondrous cat and we enjoy him so much.  I'm not sure who he thinks he is, but "King" comes to mind. He is very intelligent and manages to make all of his wishes known, but is also very grateful for his home.

Lucky sounds like a cat we had many years ago.  He would climb a tree by the front walk and drop down on the back of any dog who happened to walk by.  It certainly made life "interesting".  All the dog owners hated him!

So nice to hear from you today.  Thanks.

Love
Betty Lou

Noah:  Thanks for your charming reply to this. I'm so glad you like cats!  I have had some wonderful ones and wept copious tears when I lost them!  Toy, my present cat, is so different from any cat I've ever had.  He's so intelligent and has a loving disposition!
