Acceptance by Invitation Only

His footsteps skitter on rain drenched pavement,
trying to find his way in the dark,
one step…then another,
mindless movement
powered by the momentum of emotional currents.

Lighted windows tease him
with the appearance of warmth and safety,
but tightly drawn curtains
and cold glass panes are a barrier,
refusing entry to the unworthy.

Uncomfortable beneath the glare of a streetlight
(illuminating his inadequacies)
he shuffles quickly down the street,
shoulders hunched against the wind,
and placing hope on an uncertain future.

Oh this is so sad. You conveyed in this poem the life of the misfit. I know it well. Great work.

There are a million messages,
in a million bottles,
you just have to know
which one to pull out of the ocean.
