Paradise I passed visible landmarks The obvious ones there, Turned down all the true roads, With exact change for bus fare. Searching through the desert, Maps spread out on my knee, This lonely stretch of road, Seemed to be calling me. In wavy rays of silver heat, Rising from the highway, A mirage, or could it be My home along the byway? I pulled the cord, stopped the bus, sign read “Paradise, three miles,” Tossed my pack upon my back, My face turned up in smiles. Along the way I stopped for shade, The heat was on the rise, Drinking from my canteen, Walking was ill advised. A pickup truck stopped alongside, Chickens clucked in the rear, An old man said, "hey, hop aboard," somehow I felt no fear. He told me of his time here, chicken farmer and his wife, Seven kids they proudly raised, Now on the leeward side of life. I asked about this Paradise, What kind of place it was, "Old fashioned, a friendly place, Population four hundred plus." We came to the town circle, Mesquite trees were the focus, Encircled by Cacti in sand, Amid mustard and wild crocus. A small café, a bar, a bank, Folks greeted me as a friend, Asked if I’d be staying a while, replied my visit I could extend. Room was found in a boarding house, With breakfast served at seven, And a job that was just a job, I thought I’d found heaven. Everyone loved this land, Revered it with passion, Treated it with respect, Not like a fad or fashion. Twenty years have come and gone, I’ve raised a family of my own, My man and me take it easy, Now that they have all grown. In his eyes, contentment, He loves me still I know, Wouldn’t trade my life for yours, I’ve got much more to show. © 2000 Corinne Bailey |

Corinne, you have written an amazing poem here...really enjoyed this one to my heart's content... regards, sudhir |

Wouldn’t trade my life for yours, I’ve got much more to show. a wonderful poem, sounds like you have plently of wexciting experiences. I am more of an armchair person, not that I spend all day in an armchair i just don't have a great desire to go out and travel. The best holiday I ever had was where I spent a few days during the summer with one of my closest friends before she moved to Australia. anyway back your poem wonderfully written, beautiful and really enjoyed reading the poem. < !signature--> ------------------------ "We Irish are too poetic to be poets, we are a nation of brilliant failures." Thanks, Sudhir and Brian. I've never actually been to paradise, my kids are young and I'm technically single. But I can dream, right? Right? Corinne |
