I watch as - One last fledgling Left alone in the nest, Unwilling to spread its tiny wings, Its brown, speckled body trembling, It perches on the edge Of the only home it has ever known. Mother robin calls to it, In melodic whistles, From a distant swaying branch, Urging her hesitant offspring into flight. The young one shakes and ruffles its small, downy wings, As if readying them to fly, But then looks away, ignoring her calls, Huddling within the sturdy safety Of twigs, string and straw, Meticulously built in early spring. Mother does not give up, But glides softly to a wire above the nest, Calling - begging her fledgling to join her. It is time now, she tells it, Continuing her gentle song, Till the young one is again perched on the edge. This time it lets go, faltering at first, Then - its wings find the wind. It joins mother briefly, Then flies out of sight. I wonder of the relationship Of this to the human experience, If the mother felt, as we do, pangs of loss When our offspring find their wings. < !signature--> Syntax Each instant comes with a price ~ J. Who knows, Syntax? Maybe the mother robin is also suffering from empty nest (literally) syndrome. Very nice, I liked the images of the birds in here. Elizabeth I'm grabbing my hat and coat I'm leaving the cat a note Quick call me a ferry boat-getting out of town! |

Loss, worry, concern... But also love, joy and pride I think all mothers in nature have some feeling of loss... |
