the man watched the bird broken and bleeding in the street. he stood on the curb, absurd in his silence. the bird's mouth opened; cars erased its speech. he shuddered in an innerness: a memory of pain aware he fingered a nickle in his pocket, watched the sun staying where it was, remembering death: a gold carnation, plucked from her bouquet he brought the flower home, gave it a glass flute to lay in; in the water it lived, and made the room light. time crept in to dust her leaves-- and drank his love's elixir in. nights with others, thrashed. dirty sheets, skin aglow. under too full moonlight, the flower watched and withered. and in that corner of the room, the flower died from clutch of heart he opens his eyes, stoops to the street, places handwarmed nickle on robin's breast. no coppers lay upon her eyes, no instinct to return to nest... sighing, he turns toward home: an envelope of stems in a desk drawer, and in a weathered rocking chair, feathered pillows of remorse. of course. |
