Struggling with my answers found I pick my feet up off the ground Fighting to accept the truth That I have lost my precious youth I don’t know when the youth imp came Conspired to play his wicked game The wheres and hows are just a mystery He crossed my brow with furrows deep He stole the prize I hoped to keep My cherished store of childhood memory I danced when I was seventeen When hairs of gray were never seen I never thought that death was drawing near The sun filled summer skies with light I won fair hearts and every fight And never tasted sadness loss or fear But now that imp has stole from me The thing I thought I’d always be And left me in this shell to fade away I push this pen to pass the time And put a word or two to rhyme Where I can dream lost dreams of yesterday Yes, I admit your general rule. That every poet is a fool: But I myself may serve to show it. That every fool is not a poet. |
