Not a Clue….. As I sat there in the darkened bar, my beer getting warmer, My eyes were suddenly stabbed by the bright mid afternoon sun Reflected in the back-bar mirror. Young, pretty, full of life, she burst through the door, The heady fragrance of youthful perfume, mixed with the sweat of enthusiasm. "Hey, aren’t you that guy who was leading the vet’s parade today?" "Uh huh. What are you doing here?" "Oh, I just came in for a coke…whew, it’s hot out there. I’ll bet you are really hot in that uniform. Are you, like, famous or something….I mean, like, you were leading the parade." "No, not famous. Do you go to school around here?" "Yeah…I graduate this year from Kraft High. Then on to State U. or hairdressers school. I’m not sure. Dad says I need "more structure"……like, Duh, I don’t have enough at home." "Uh huh." "Gee, you must have done lots of neat stuff….you have all those ribbons and medals." "Not really." "You must have been to Viet Nam….I recognize that yellow and red one. My Dad has one like it….but he doesn’t say much about it. He just goes on a crying jag every time something comes on TV about that stupid war. My uncle, who moved to Canada back in the ‘60’s says that all those guys over there were baby killers. Yeah, like, Duh, who wasn’t?" "Uh huh." "What’s that blue ribbon, with the little white stars? Oh, I see, it matches the ribbon around your neck and that neat star thingy. Like, did you buy that….or did they give it to you for doing something neat?’ "Yeah…….I bought it….with my……" "Oh WOW!!….that would look SOOO good with my dark blue sweater." "Uh huh" "Are you, like, a hero or something?" "No….there are no heros….just well trained men." "Well, gotta run….got to find a ride home. My Dad kinda freaked….Mom had to take him home. I mean, like, Duh, get over it Dad….that was eons ago." "Uh huh." "Bye now….have fun with your beer……hehehehe." "Yeah, I will…….and next time you see your uncle, tell him to come see me." "Like, Duh!! He doesn’t know where you live, silly." "Yeah, you’re right…..nobody knows where I live." |

Wow Hardrock, this screamed a message to me. One thing I try to live by, and Hope I succeed is keeping a respect for not just the things I may experience or relate to, but the respect for what others have carried in their life, rather it touched my life or not. Keep those writings coming!! |

Hardrock, what an excellent poem, the message so subtle, so sad. There's lots of pychological stuff to graze on in there! Lotharingia "For God's sake, he's a poet. Poets are meant to feel miserable. Otherwise, what the hell are they here for? What are they going to write about?" Tom Holland |

Wow! What work hon!! Be fair, the young don't have a clue, that comes with age and wrinkles LOL This piece is a sad depiction of war, the vets, todays youth and more. Great work hon. Thanks to all of you.....I realize this is not really poetry....it's not even prose. To be honest, I'm not sure WHAT it is....but did you ever have one of those moments when something struck you, and you just had to get it down on paper? Well, this is the result of one of those moments for me. It's just a.....well, I'll let you decide for yourself what it is. Thanks again, Hardrock. |
