I witnessed the glory of the sky
On many a lonesome day
But never to feel caressing breeze
For a pane of glass protected those secrets

I traced my fingertips gently
Over the smooth transparency
But it did not relent to my fawning
Remained indifferent to my need

I hated that moment and it’s lingering
It’s the clearest vision contained in memory
A time when they needed no bars to hold me
Because I was already broken, suffocated

Granted no liberty to breathe living air
Where even forced sleep proved no escape
And countless young eyes blinked empty
We just gave into disease

Many years have passed, I’m constantly haunted
I can’t speak aloud for fear of being heard
Because I just can’t bear the infinite solitude
Of staring through that vicious window again

We have all shared many sorrows and strife
But some of you have been jaded
Please try to accept the open hand of guidance
Because there is no kind asylum behind those locked windows.

whatcha doing in this darkness baby
when you know love will set you free?
will you stay in the sea forever
Drowning there for all eternity? ~Live

Interesting read,
Window bars and such don't bother me,
anymore, they've changed meanings.
Which once kept me in,
now just keep the others out,
and I prefer my solitude.
A thoughtful piece you write.

Very interesting story, and something to think about. No asylum to be found, especially not in the so named place. Awesome..

I don't know how literal that poem is meant to be... you have no idea how closely I related.  Only one of my poems (actually a song)touches upon my simliar experience.  I was 15 when I wrote it.  It's called "I know her." I don't plan on posting it on this site, but you can find it on my homepage, which you can find in my profile.

Keep up with beautifully put, truthful writing.  Those poems are windows to your soul.

Bars just metal and metal rusts...
I think if you test these bars you will find that they will break off, on the count of three...1,2,3. See the window is now open,
shall we fly to the unknown

"We have all shared many sorrows and strife
But some of you have been jaded
Please try to accept the open hand of guidance
Because there is no kind asylum behind those locked windows".

Dawn, I often see bars sometimes open doors, I guess when we find ourselves in a locked room we should move to an open one, but while asylums trap us they also protect us. I think this asylum has a garden. Wonderfully written piece, I am just ranting here so I will shut up.

i love this line, and i don't ever want to feel this infinite solitude.

Dawn,
you're right in everything you say in this piece, except one, on occasions we need the asylum to keep us safe from ourselves until we learn to deal with what's inside. However wherever possible we need the asylum of friends as well as trained personnel.
Thank you for such a heart wrenching poem.

Be well
Kethry
