Where Rabbits Assemble At first it felt an intrusion, like trespassing on sacred sands, but wonder quickly won over as we walked these pueblo lands. Where the Valles Caldera erupted, basalt layers formed blackened tuffs, by way of rain, snow, constant winds rose up sheer cliffs and bluffs. The Cavates were built on two levels, petroglyphs of plumed serpents delight, concentric circles, masks and spirals, inscriptions in black upon white. High upon the wide, flat mesa, stand ruins of the commune, some returned to bricks of adobe, skylights now capturing moon. When we climbed to the second level, perspective played tricks on the eyes, our minds together shifted, flying toward turquoise skies. It was easy to let the wind take us, back to the days of Puye’s glory, three hundred years of dwellers imagining each one’s story. Picked a piece of painted pottery, showed you delicate black bands, we gazed with new found clarity, before returning it to native sands. Puye was finally abandoned, circa 1580 A.D. Why they left when they left is still a mystery. © 2000 CM Bailey |

Corinne~ Thank you so much for posting this one for book consideration. As you know - it is one of my favorites. Intoxicating and irrestible. You have fascinated me with this place. I've learned so much from your pen. Just wonderful is the 'painting' of this piece of history. Thanks, my friend. ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ noles1@totcon.com |

Dearest Marge, thank you, my friend for suggesting it! It is very fascinating place, there are many places such as this to explore in the southwest, only wish there was enough time! Thank you also, Denise, Severn and Brad for your kind words. Corinne |
