Bars of sunlight slanting in
As if to brace the windows
Breaking on the empty chair
Cup and bowl and glass
Shutters slicing it like cheese

I let them sit on the table
Taking in the memory
You eating a quick breakfast
Each hair in place
Blouse and skirt just so

The phone rings
I take it in the bedroom
Your voice merges in my mind
With images of your form
Still pressing down the sheets

"I'm only a mile away
And I miss your smile
The sound of your voice
I had to hear it again"
I muffle the phone

Clear the tear from my throat
"You don't know how much
I miss you too"
"There's Murial, gotta go"
Two voices: "I love you"

Wilfred,
I read, and I liked, and I will read at your place once again.

Oh, how pretty is this !
I think the flow of this piece was
as natural as being part of the scenes.
Great work, poet.

(Special note to Bill, Karilea, and Sunny1:
We all need thank Kaile for resurrecting this piece - for in spite of your Replies back in August I overlooked it until now   ) Now I can offer you proper thanks

Bill-

Thank you - and I will continue to read as much as I can and offer kind words - or I appreciate your very much

Karilea-

It is not my intention to hide - I freely admit I love your sweet words. Thank you.

Sunny1-

My humble thanks for such very nice words from you - (deep bow)

Kaile-

Double thanks to you - In my zeal to respond to others and write fresh pieces - I neglected this until your reminder - Thank you for that AND you perceptive reading.

Martie-

Thank you - I got off to a better than usual start - but couldn't carry it through to the end- - I'll keep trying (I love your perceptions   )

Marge -

~blushing~ You called me 'poet'! (I don't think anyone has said it quite that way -for I have always thought I was/am still striving to become one) - Thank you so much

Wilfred, this is so beautiful. I think the end is as wonderful as the start. Brought a smile to my face as it reminded me of my grandparents and their love for each other.
