I'd always felt fine on my own.
It made me feel quite good
to be in charge of my own life
as only singles could.
but everyone kept telling me
in order to survive
one has to have a family
to really feel alive
and so I bowed to their wise words
but please don't ask me why
then said goodbye to my old buddies
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

They were the heroes on the screen
I fashioned my life by.
I made each day adventurous
then, smiling, waved goodbye.
"Come back, Shane!", women called to me
with teardrops in their eyes...
That didn't do for men like me and
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

They were the best - They were so cool!
They knew just what to say.
With brains and brawn they traveled on
to do things their own way.
Men watched with admiration and
the women....with a sigh.
No one could hold a candle up to
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

Oh, there were also others who
would do their best to thrill us -
James Bond, Bruce Lee and Bronson,
not to mention Mister Willis
But, when it came to straight pizzazz
to make one's throat go dry
they were the men that I admired most
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

But now I've traded Double OO's
for Cheerios and Trix.
No more Rambo, no more Rocky
getting in his licks.
No more Dirty Harry....see ya
later, Callahan.
I turned in my Baretta to
become a married man.

So long, man without a name. I
guess I'll see ya later
And, Arnold, seems like I've become
an old ex-Terminator!
I've been you guys for so darned long
it's hard to say goodbye.
You'll always be inside me, fellas,
Arnold, Clint and Sly.

Now, secret agent Balladeer
is in the PTA
and drives a Ranger, not a Porche
to take the kids to play.
Instead of fighting evil, trying
hard to stay alive,
he sits behind a desk five days
a week from 9 to 5.

But, sometimes late at night, the wife
already gone to bed
I sit beside my sleeping children,
gently rub their heads
look down upon their precious faces
and think, possibly,
my buddies, Arnold, Clint and Sly
might wish that they were me....

Now Balladeer, you know you are still a terminator...that's your job and no matter how small the villain, you get the job done, right?  Gotta love this poem, it is so sweet and well done...so are you!  er well, sweet anyway.

as always, your words give me something to think about.... yes, we all look back on our lives and the choices we have made and sometimes, we wish we'd chosen differently...  the lucky ones know what they have... you've said that well, here, michael... enjoyed this very much

I am at a loss of words here Mike. (You know that is a compliment!..lol) This took a turn I hadn't expected and I am glad it did. Very touching my friend. (If they don't wish that they were you...I think they are the crazy ones.   )

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shodows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face...

     BRAVO!

Fear not ... I'll always call
you my "poetic hero" Balladeer!

I cannot begin to tell you how much I

Your ending brought a sigh and a smile ...
Nothing gets better than that!

Best wishes,

You may not realize it Balladeer, but you've gone from admiring heroes to BEING a hero.  Great tradeoff!

What a classic line. Great writing, Balladeer, and of course I loved the poignant moment.

This story has me smiling.  What a nicely written twist and the rhythm of the poem kept me quickly reading to get the moral of the story.  I enjoyed this one.

NO, in all seriousness, this is a really tender piece deer! I think the grass is always greener on the other side at some times. But HEY, you can't get anything more precious than those chillins!!
Smile on my face, and a warm spot in my heart. This is what you left me with

'Deer

You also make a great Mozart, the way you play all these ladies' hearts - you are a silver-tongued devil!  This is another of your signature poems, written so well, and so perceptively.  Great job, Mike.
