She wakes to sunlight
   streaming in her window.
For a moment the night
   before forgotten.
Then it all comes
   flooding back
And once again the
   teardrops fall.
Knowing what she has to do
   doesnt make it any easier
Who can blame her for
   wanting to stay in bed
Holding her teddy bear,
   being a child.
Those things now lost to
   her forever more.
She leaves her bed
   and slowly dresses
Brushes her hair and
   makes up her face.
Then goes to face her
   family.
All her hard won
   courage falters
When she sees her
   daddys' eyes.
What she's lost can
   never be recovered
What she's gained has
   yet to be seen.
So she calls them
   all together
Says " I have something
   to say
This isnt easy so
   please be patient
You know I've loved
   him for so long now
With my heart and in
   my mind.
Now I've loved him
   with my body
And now I have a
   price to pay."
She watched the truth
   dawn in their eyes.
Tears on her cheeks
   for the failed dreams.
Then slowly her mom
   comes to stand before her
Taking tear stained cheeks
   in loving hands
And says the only thing
   a mother can.
We love you, daughter,
   we always will.
She straightens her shoulders
   and turns to her father
And he sees a woman where
   his little girl once stood.
I'm keeping my baby
   are the words she whispers
I'm keeping this child
   to cherish and love.

This is my muses answer to Zions challenge for a decision from Always Other Choices

This is a very tender and moving poem. Fortunately times have changed and these problems can at least be handled now without disgracing the young woman involved. I know it's still a long hard road to face but at least there's some help..especially if the family stands by with their love for the daughter unmoved.

Mark...yes my muse did me proud on this one.

Bdc...As soon as I read Zions challenge she started clamoring to be heard...I put her off for a few days but wow she is insistent...thank you.

Sunny1...I can always count on your kind comments, and they are better because I know you are sincere.

powerfull images here, well written and defined by the emotions
sometimes these stories have happy endings,
sometimes not,
some people cant be as accepting or forgiving.
giving unconditional love is the key
challenge very well met Paula.
thanks for the sincere replies in open 8 this weekend ...
take care

My goodness eyes would not stop the tears as I read along thru verse to end...

Such a heartwarming poem with a pivotal message for parents and young women of today...

Whoa!  I'm glad Coco brought this one around again.  I may have missed it otherwise.
Beautiful free verse. You could hear the silence when the daughter spoke.
As always, Paula... beautiful.
