A Rumor

A rumor is a tale of little truth you chance to hear
It flies with glee and lightening speed from ear to mouth to ear
To arbitrary destinations with no care or fear

It brews within the pools of envy, or the wells of wrath
To the second ear the little bit of truth is cut in half
The third tongue then repeats the tale that makes the rumor laugh

It sits upon the grapevine til it’s juicy and full ripe
And waits for an enchanted ear to take a swooping swipe
Then drips and oozes from a mouth without a single wipe

It’s gossip, gab and garished glut, that’s relished with no shame
Attempting to hishonor someone else’s pride or name
But only snaps a picture of the mouth from which it came

I look upon the rumor mill with an instinctive dread
When one comes flying toward me, I just simply duck my head
If it should be about me, I won’t know until I’m dead

If you abuse your ICQ, then you may not escape
A rumor may come flying back and leave your mouth agape
A falsehood told of you could leave a taste of sour grape

Good morning Elizabeth,
How right you are about a little rumor. It can destroy, or perhaps bring hope. Thank you for sharing this, there is so much truth to it.

Oh I know what you mean Elizabeth...a rumour is just what it describes.....a rumour...
"a statement or report current but not authenticated.".....but you describe the effects of the rumour so well in this wonderful poem......great writing as usual!!

Very wise words, Elizabeth. I don't know what this was written about as I am not in the 'gossip loop', which is just as well. It is just poison for the spirit. Great poem on the subject!

The forums I came from - and those I knew on ICQ and IM -some dating back to Powwow & mirc
I discovered and separated myself from a veritable flood of gossip and rumor
learned quickly to make "I know nothing" my mantra.
I came here thinking I'd found Paradise - and relatively speaking I still believe PF to be untainted - Please don't tarnish my image

I truly feel this is a fantastice creation -
all these triplets each so cleverly rhymed -
and a message so meaty with a caution for us all - I can only say "most excellent".

Wilfred, I also think these forums are untainted, because I've never heard any gossip at all, or else I would have had to duck my head. I don't even know exactly what icq is because I don't have it
I didn't write this for any purpose other than to tell what I think of rumors, since it's been a subject here lately
I have only heard good things about other poets. It is a community of very fine people.
Thank you all for your resposes
