ebony and pumpkin colored
specter of tail and hiss
shadowed mouse fatality
sly stalker of noises
ball of purr and soft meow
a contradiction in her own mind

snobbish and aloof from day to day
sometime cuddler near open fire
basket case of the worst kind
bag, box, tube all fair game
for this shadow cat's peruse
and occasional foray

surprise in the garden patch
to find her nestled in the beanpatch
like pooling shadows in the late afternoon
her golden eye focused as I work
though soon with a dismissing yawn
she flits back to her mouse dreamland

my shadow cat holds my heart
in her be-clawed sometimes friendly paw
with her butter-won't-melt
devil-may-care, come-what-may
I'm-sleeping-all-day attitude
(I long for the unfettered life of a cat!!)

Wonderful! As the owner (don't let them know I said that) of 3, I see mine in every line you wrote!

Having a feline nature, I can really appreciate this poem, Heather.  Very good depiction of the domesticated feline.

Heather - Writing about CATS are we???  Yanno, this is a very sweet poem (except that part about the cat).  Other than that, I enjoyed it immensely - heh heh.

Psst, Heather, it's me, Long John.  Listen, I had to keep appearances up with those cat remarks and all.  I actually did enjoy your poem, but don't tell anybody I said that.  OK?  Even on ICQ)
