Author's Note: I wrote this poem about six years ago, and my love for my father continues to grow. To My Pal (For My Dad) Just before sunset - The quiet hour When all of nature Pauses in silent meditation. I lay on my stomach on the lawn, Listening to my walkman, And savoring the stillness Of this beautiful moment; When Day prepares to exit The broad stage of earth, And the curtain of Night Hangs, poised to fall. Looking through the front window of our house, I see your head in profile As you watch a video. I gaze at you, for a moment; My mind recording every detail Of your appearance, although I already Have many pictures of you Stored away in my heart. I smile as I look at your tousled hair; Still sandy-colored, with only the sideburns graying, Even though you are 65 years old. The broad frames of your bifocals Highlight your piercing, hazel eyes. Over the years, I have seen so many things In the depths of those eyes - Joy, sorrow, anger, laughter, pain and gratitude. Yet, whatever else your eyes may hold, I never once have looked into them Without seeing the deep love That you have for me. There, in the bottom of the window, I can see your muscular left arm. Strange, how your arms, that are so strong, Have also been so gentle, As you have hugged me, through the years. Funny, too, how both the strength And the gentleness of your arms Are but shadows Of the strength and gentleness Of your spirit. Suddenly, I am struck By a terrifying thought: How will it be, someday, When I look through that same window, And you are not there? What will fill the hole in my heart, That will be left when you pass on? How will I survive, Without my hero? A million questions; No answers. I pray that it will be a very long time Before I have to answer those questions. In the meantime, Dad, I want to tell you That I am grateful to you For believing in me; And, for being a man That I can believe in. Nothing and no-one Will ever take your place, Dad. I don't think I ever read anything as perfect said about their father, felt about their father. You are so lucky to have your father. Cherish him always as I know you do. Wonderful work. Sauni Sauni :) Have you ever known the color grey when the nighttime finds you weak I have, I've walked that road each time; that's where my angel sleeps |
