I wander lonely round the Passions site,
Just forming words worth forming in my head,
For nowhere can I find a place to write,
And nowhere can I say what should be said.
For from Down Under come some broken howls,
So free and wild they barely make a verse,
While Uncle Sam karate chops his vowels
To metered regularity.  A curse
On such contemporary heathen ways,
That desecrate the language of my land.
This sceptred isle still lives the ancient days,
Of kingly diction beautifully bland!

So though in foreign fields I walk alone,
I claim this ENGLISH Forum as my own.

I'm with you on this one Poertree, I was in fact trying to find something to use against them. Imagine the horrors which will now befall our minds and ears. 8-)

oh and another thing before i go

this sonnet isn't totally banal (nearly but not entirely..lol) there are four (i think)references to famous bits of english lit .. the first non-Brit to find them all gets to become an honorary Brit ...!!!

now i ask you .. what more could you possibly want?? ..lol

good day to you

Now sit down, shut up, and colour (<---UK approved spelling, so you would have no trouble DECIPHERING what I mean...I am not so cruel as to play mind games with people..hmmph!) nicely with all the other kids....

*much luv, hugs, and kisses to my fave guy in yer town!*

Okay ... so you snagged me on decipher ... I was in a hurry *grrrrr*.  I'll see what I can do with the allusions ... it's been a while since you've written anything so, naturally, I am out of practice.

Oh and ONE more thing: I thought I would take pity on you, considering you're all caught up in your Britishisms...I am afraid that Down Under when applied to me is sadly inaccurate...

tch tch ~shaking head~

That's Australia...and NZ is at the TOP of the world as far as I'm concerned...lol

Ha ha ... I see you FINALLY woke up .. you antipodean lie-a-bed ...

had a rough night did we ?? ~smirk~

ok .. you're not doing so bad though ~snarl~ ... your supposedly two allusions are in fact one though ... Wordsworth wrote Daffodils .. only three to go !!   heh heh

calm and serene SP

.... shut up Heather .. whose side are you on anyway ..humpphh!

oh and here's the "answer" to the allusion in lines one and two:

William Wordsworth

Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a Cloud
That floats on high o'er Vales and Hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd
A host of dancing Daffodills;
Along the Lake, beneath the trees,
Ten thousand dancing in the breeze.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee:—
A Poet could not but be gay
In such a laughing company:
I gaz'd—and gaz'd—but little thought
What wealth the shew to me had brought:

For oft when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude,
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the Daffodils.

Ah well...not a bad effort for bleary-eyedity...

Hmmm...wanna tell me who wrote THESE lines then Sir P:

'The battle rent a cobweb diamond-strung
And cut a flower beside a groundbird's nest...
A butterfly its fall had dispossessed...'

HEH

(Won't dispossess me of my accuracy for long, rest assured...lol)

Ugh!!! I just saw the "honorary Brit" part!  Philip, to motivate people to work REALLY hard at finding the hidden references, you really ought to say, "Last one to find them is an honorary Brit!"     lol.

honorary IS the ENGLISH (dunno where you come from lol!)

I'm out all day in sunny Suffolk .. back later to carry on winning the war

That's just borrowed from the yanks...seriously - other countries in the commonwealth (though we don't like her) spell things with U's like Heather so kindly pointed out - read COLOUR...don't tell me you don't spell it that way? And infact even if you do then your language is JOLLY (snicker) inconsistent...

winning...English wimp...you don't know what it means...

(and it was a lucky fluke - Robert Frost is just too common...humph)

Lady K slinks away in gales of laughter...

ok ..  i take it you all give up ...lol ..  so here ya go:

ref to "ANCIENT DAYS":

AUTHORWalter Chalmers Smith
TOPICAdoration and Praise
SCRIPTURAL ALLUSION[1]1 Tim. 1:17, 6:16 [2]Ps 36:6 [3] Acts 17:25, Isa.40:7 [4]Rev 7:11
WORDS
1
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

2
Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

3
To all, life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish - but naught changeth Thee.

4
Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All praise we would render; O help us to see
'Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee!

and also sort of in:

"The Glastonbury Hymn" -- By William Blake, [1757-1827].
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Amid these dark Satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burnished gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold!Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant Land.

ref to "FOREIGN FIELDS":

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is forever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blessed by the suns of home.

- - Rupert Brooke "The Soldier"

ref to "SCEPTRED ISLE":

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands, -
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.
- act 2. sc. 1.

WS

King Richard II

there you are .... you're all edyoocated now ...heh heh

*GAK!* Glad I didn't try harder to "demonstrate my brilliance" ... would have been MOST humiliating.  Thanks for the education (keep in mind I was educated in one of those dumbed-down American public schools).
