I was reading an article that suggested that repetition in poetry was a good thing. They suggested that it created a somewhat hypnotic effect on the readers. What y'all think? |

I love it, but it has to be done just right for good effect. I have tried using it myself. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Nothing can deter a poet, for he is actuated by pure love. Who can predict his comings and goings? "Thoreau" |

The following is an example of a poem where I once used this very same technique. I recieved many good responses commenting on that very same thing. What think you? initials of each pain are inscribed on her gilden soul tarnished broken tainted memories shelled away buried deeply no remnant of then tarnished broken tainted hopeless is the dreary prospect now of living out life tarnished broken tainted forsaken dreams into a charnel stile housing of no hope tarnished broken tainted revealed futility upon one faithless man bestowing lust tarnished broken tainted continue though never will be shown traitorous or true tarnished broken tainted violated the once she believed real is the story love tarnished broken tainted illusory the masque is portrayed her face a smile faux tarnished broken tainted |

While I enjoyed the poem I think the effect would be better with your repitition scattered...not used after every stanza. Thats not an expert opinion of course. Just my own tastes. I guess I'm saying its too much repition for lil ole me. Nothing can deter a poet, for he is actuated by pure love. Who can predict his comings and goings? "Thoreau" |

I say it depends on the poem and what is being repeated. Just my two cents worth! ~Sheri |

I get bored with repitition and eventually begin skipping the repeated lines... I mean, I already know what it's going to say, right? You are more than the sum of what you consume |

Properly used... what better way to stress a point. Or even better, to create a memorable few lines that brings the reader back again and again in memory, long after the poem is tucked away. But... as with everything, moderation is the key... as well as strategic placement. At least that's my humble opinion... for what it's worth. |

Opinions here are always welcome Moonshadow...and sometimes..though not often in my own op, repetition can work... K |

If you repeat a line but use it differently as far as context is concerned then repitition can actually be quite clever. For example, using homynyms, or sometimes words with different meanings, can allow repitition to be used very creatively. Also repitition is a great technique if it is altered somehow at times, for example, you could repeat the line a few times and then change it here or there slightly, to create a different effect. Like the repitition can be the entire line, minus a word. Repetition is a poetic technique, just like rhyme, meter, metaphor, etc. Used correctly it can enhance poetry a great deal.
