What's an analogy? Can you give me some examples? And how are they different than metaphors? |

PdV: An analogy is not a figure of speech. Basically, an analogy is the inference that if two (or more) different things are similar or the same in one respect, they will be the same in another respect. I was watching the Discovery Channel last night and remember an example of an analogy. There are scientists that believe that dinosaurs were more closely related to birds than to reptiles because of anatomical similarities between dinosaurs and modern birds. Because all scientists have is the fossil record to go by, they make several analogies between dinosaurs and birds: birds migrate so dinosaurs may have migrated; birds come in a variety of vivid colors so dinosaurs may have been extremely colorful; birds are warm-blooded so dinosaurs must have been warm blooded. Hope this helps. Jim |

Kamla: So right (in agreeing with me) and yet so wrong ... try the encarta site: "fig·ure of speech (plural fig·ures of speech) noun -- nonliteral expression or use of language: an expression or use of language in a nonliteral sense in order to achieve a particular effect. Metaphors, similes, and hyperbole are all common figures of speech." ... or maybe Webster: "Main Entry: figure of speech Date: 1824 : a form of expression (as a simile or metaphor) used to convey meaning or heighten effect often by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning or connotation familiar to the reader or listener." While it is true that all figures of speech are not metaphors, it is not true that all metaphors are not figures of speech. Chalk up one for Discovery Channel Boy. Jim |

Kamla: That is what I wanted you to think ... a little bit of strategy I learned from reading Sun Tzu. Let the opposition think they've won so they let their guard down then rush in for a decisive victory. Oh, and by the way ... I'll check back here to see if you've come up with your "suitable comeback" after I finish writing my epic. Your smart-alecky Yank friend, Jim |

Jim the Yank: remember how I disputed the whole dict. thing??? *I say slowly to Jim* 'Step AWAY from the dictionary...put the definitions DOWN' Metaphors have MUTATED my friend...dictionarys are like bibles for the literary obssessed - and just like the bible I don't agree with all that is there... If you wish to be reminded WHY I don't think mets are F of S's then refer to the old post please....I say haughtily - the post where I WON... (though you in your delusional state may think otherwise) I have things I must do...I must defend the inventive and protect the rights of the non-believers! |

ROTFLMAO.... I have to leave that there - It's too funny... We can't type a double colon here... What's up, Ron? One Colon is sufficient for you??? Huh?? Try again.. I give up... [This message has been edited by Nan (edited 04-26-2000).] |

Kamla: Your arguments were convincing but I hesitate to say that you won. It seems that you don't believe metaphors are figures of speech because you are confusing metaphors with idioms, perhaps a result of being exposed to one of the many varieties of malaria common in the South Pacific. Take a refresher look yourself. /pip/Forum32/HTML/000013.html The most common American mental disorder, by the way, is hubris so even if you do win I will probably be incapable of admitting it. Jim P.S. LOL, Nan, you are killing me. Shouldn't you be deciding what your next workshop is going to be or something? [This message has been edited by jbouder (edited 04-26-2000).] |

Remind me never to get into a debate with the two of you... I don't get into disputes unless I'm right... and I see no clear cut winner emerging here.. |
