Look at the roots of these common "compliments" Nice "Middle English, foolish, from Old French, from Latin nescius, ignorant, from nescre, to be ignorant. See nescience." (from dictionary.com) Fond "Middle English fonned, foolish, probably from past participle of fonnen, to be foolish, probably from fonne, fool." (from dictionary.com) Shrewd "Middle English shrewed, wicked, from shrew, rascal. See shrew." (from dictionary.com) So instead of thanking someone for calling you "nice" "fond" or "shrewd" next time you should probably slap him!
