Hi... I know this may sound stupid, but I need some enlightenment. What is an ode? In the dictionary, it means: 1. A lyric poem of some length, usually of a serious or meditative nature and having an elevated style and formal stanzaic structure. 2a. A choric song of classical Greece, often accompanied by a dance and performed at a public festival or as part of a drama. 2b. A classical Greek poem modeled on the choric ode and usually having a three-part structure consisting of a strophe, an antistrophe, and an epode. Is there a simpler, more comprehensive way of explaining it? _,,,^.^,,,_ |

Thanks for replying. But, does it have to be written in any particular style? _,,,^.^,,,_ |

It's not a format... it's just a way in which you direct the feelings in your poem. An ode kind of takes a thing or concept and writes to it (or on it) as a way of describing the beauty of it. It's kind of easy. Just think of it this way... for example... Ode to my Glove... would be written as an addressal of a glove. "Oh glove, you are so worn with dirt and torn at the edges!" Kind of thing. If you wanted to have "My glove, it is worn with dirt and torn at the edges," that wouldn't be an "ode to" but an "ode on." Just a little minor thing to help choose a title. Whatever the ode is to/on is whatever the central subject matter of the poem is. Try reading some odes, like Keats' odes, and you'll see that they're done in all kinds of formats, rhyme schemes, meter schemes... Just pick a subject as the center of your poem and write on it.. or to it... Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world. |
