I would say anything longer than 7,000 words. . . then, you're probably at the beginning of what's been termed "Novella"

Sven is technically right, but I think for practical purposes, you also need to consider your intent when classifying the story. If you want to submit it to a magazine, for example, they will usually run you down to 5,000 words, and often less. When posting on the Internet, LOL, I've found that people's definition of 'short story' usually runs at less than a thousand words.

And if you're writing something you're going to let me read - I don't care how long it is - just let me read it!!!

So if my story starts to get away from me..if I can't tell it in 5000 words, what then? Sometimes they have a life of their own you know....

Was "The Old Man and the Sea", or "The Pearl"
composed on the basis of length? Or was it just the way they turned out?
Interesting thoughts, but I think (as Christopher). Please let me read it, the way you first wrote it?
