Dashing away beneath the slashes of moonlight Silvery shimmers cutting through the night time Racing through the hills not easily traveled They're moving quickly through the nightshade forests Huddling away from the narrow torchlights expanding in their sight What had they done that was so wrong, I wondered Drawing protectively nearer, facing people I thought I once knew But suddenly horrific faces of disappoint, hatred, and disgust "Stand aside," they tell me, grabbing, pulling and away my support from them Unable to cry out as suddenly they're left alone Unable to voice what I thought But instead lost in the river of disfavor Cast out like a tear into the sea beyond "What had they done?" I wanted to scream at them "What had they done so horribly wrong that makes you hate them so?" But all I can hear is the drumming of the whispers Meaningless, thoughtless, but more powerful than the truth Pushing everyone who listened without a honing ear To destroy the victims that deserved no such fate "They loved each other, you wouldn't understand," they reply. "Too young, not worldly enough, just believe us: this is best." But I couldn't, wouldn't, didn't believe them Because I knew what was inside my heart was best And it wasn't the what the whispers said They had been through too much All they deserved was support And yet I could see so little of that simple thing, want, and need That I wondered what the people truly knew Of their own minds or the whisper's voice? Chasing away him, driving away her Condemning, punishing, pulling them apart forever longer Telling the other that their mate was dirt, trash and nothing more Than the beautiful soul their eyes had seen I couldn't understand why such a thing would be so shattering All from such a simple thing as a whisper Outraging the world, it seems, they're together Stronger, braver, closer than before Embracing close, careful of the babe in their arms Keeping others away with guilt, peaceful silence, and love They look at each other and whisper: "I love you." Such a tender thing, I thought, looking at their obvious affection Until I heard the horrible whisper Echoing from the group around Letting me go as I flee to be by their side Forever hearing the sounds of the whisper: "There, they said it again!" "Sometimes stars can only be seen in darkness." "Sorrow's crown of sorrow is remembering happier things." |

Beautiful.....simply beautiful.....your poem makes me wonder if THIS is what it would've been like if Romeo and Juliet have lived...(okay, I know they were just characters, but you get my drift! LOL) Great work....I love the way you've made the whispers seem as powerful as screams, which is the way it is when those whispers are filled with hate. Bobbycat =^..^= ~~Blessed Be!~~ |
