Sitting in Michael's Lap

Deeply

How deeply lost within in your eyes
Once dwelt my raptured soul,
When Love would know no compromise
Nor rest if less than whole;

How deeply my devotion grew
When rested on my shrine
The graceful vision that was you:
No goddess more divine.

So deeply felt was ev’ry kiss
So sacred each caress --
Such rare perfection shone in this --
No verse could e’er confess

How deeply flowed the river swift
That raged with love unbound,
And washed in purity the gift
Of joy in you I’d found.

So sure and deeply ran my trust
In you, in what we shared,
That when your blow was dealt in lust
I met it unprepared;

So deeply cut the wound you made:
It tore my world apart
To know the hand which held the blade
Had guarded once my heart.

So fitting that you were the one
To drag my spirit down:
For where the waters deeply run,
‘Tis easier to drown.

Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are coral made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes;
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange...

"To know the hand which held the blade
Had guarded once my heart."

Kess, yes exquisite...in both voice, craft and emotion. Such a poignant and searing expression of betrayal and irony.

(I was so pleased to see your byline tonight.)

Thank you, my friends and colleagues, for your kind replies.

Sy:    Thank you sir, 'twas as I intended.

Claire:  Your praise is both welcome and appreciated, for I have a great deal of respect for your talent.  Most of all, it is nice to know that I have been missed.  Thank you muchly, my friend.

Master:  You are a one-man fan club!  You'd better start building me a bigger house if you plan to keep pumping up my ego like this!

Sven:  First off, big HUGS!  I've missed you ...

Second, as much as I appreciate your sympathy, I'm afraid it is misplaced -- this piece was written for a friend, to whom I fear I have been nearly useless as far as soothing this heartache goes.  I only hope this brings with it a bit of the comfort I have been unable to provide ...

pen of passion:  ouch, indeed.  your compliment is well received.

Superb?  (Methinks with this one, you have come dangerously close to draining a bunch of poets of superlatives...BRAVO.)

Kess, this one just plain gouges the eyeballs.  'Tis true - the more we love something the more we can be hurt by it.  Believe me, I can feel every bit of the pain beneath this one.  My empathies to you tonight, my friend.

The last verse hit me right between the eyes.  Practically knocked me off my feet.  Excellently worded.  I'll have to keep my eye out for your work.

'Allo m'friend.

I can see that your absence has not been without it's benefits. You've come back with a mighty punch, especially for one such as I who reads much of me in this.

"When Love would know no compromise"

Perhaps this says most of it here. Is not a portion of "love" about compromise? When expected to be more, "Whole," as you said, then perhaps it is doomed from the beginning, no?

Beautiful and haunting and right on the mark. Thank you my friend.

PdV:  You are too kind, but thank you nonetheless.

J.C:  Always glad to lend a hand -- often it leads to future friendships.  Thank you for reading.

WhiteNite:  Fear not, you are not the only poet here with the spelling affliction -- LOL.  We all have our moments.  Your speechlessness is the highest form of flattery; thank you.

serenity:  Methinks you have perfected the ideal way to stroke my already somewhat overblown ego!  Thanks much!  hehehe

Michael:  How right you are.  Unfortunately, it is difficult to love something less simply to safeguard one's peace of mind, is it not?  Stubborn beast, that Love -- always thinking in extremes ...

Rosemary:  I am not normally a violent woman, but I will take a bow on that slug between the peepers, here.  Thank you for a most generous compliment!

dhuron:  glad you enjoyed, thanks for reading.

Mike:  Likewise, I'm sure.

Denise:  Glad to be back.  Your enthusiasm is neverending -- people like you keep me coming back to this place!

Sven:

Chris:  Allo yourself!  (sigh)

As far as my "absence" goes, I believe that it was you who said that stress and misery make for awesome poetry, was it not?  LOL

As for the rest, I must refer you to one of my favorite sonnets of all time:

Let us not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments.  Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove ...

Indeed, my friend, any relationship is about compromise -- such is the nature of individuals, there are bound to be points on which even the most "perfect" couple will not see eye-to-eye.  But Love, in and of itself , is an all-or-nothing proposition: it is either whole, or it is not love.  Period.  There is nothing wrong with always expecting a rose to be a rose, regardless of how sweet it might smell (or not) right at the moment!

Thank you all again ...

--Kess

Better late than never means you get another step up to the plate - I love this for more than one reason... First, that it isn't about you - That's a good thing - Secondly, it's wonderfully crafted... of course... and... it's not iambic pentameter... iambic, yes... pentameter, nope... you deviant, you...

How lovely and yet how sad love can be...
it can take you to the highest mountains..
and drag you thru the deepest valleys....
