Author's Note: This is one of my sadder poems - but it's also one of my wife's favorites.

             Cruelty

There's cruelty in the morning sun;
It mocks me with its light -
This great, infernal demon,
Disguised in robes of white.
There was a time it warmed my heart,
And made my spirit whole.
But, now, it only seems to cast
Long shadows o'er my soul.

There's danger in the robin's song,
That dares my dreams to rise -
As if a mortal man like me
Could ever touch the sky!
There was a time it gave me peace,
And made my spirit soar.
Then, down I fell, with broken wings -
Now I shall fly, no more.

There's sorrow in the morning dew,
That glistens on the grass -
Reflecting golden sunlight,
Like a fairy's looking glass.
There was a time it brought me joy,
And made my spirit laugh.
But, now, it's only Heaven's tears,
Shed in my behalf.

Danny...thank you for your kind words, they give me a lift - especially having just read your poem "A Soft Place to Fall," and seeing what a talented poet you are!

This is sad... but it's also a magnificent description of how grief or depression or hopelessness or despair alter our perceptions and rob us of joy. Beautiful!

Troy,
This is excellent.  It speaks to my heart at this time.  I have been feeling this way lately.  Thank you for sharing.

Suthern - so true!  It's also interesting to me how nature, which brings me such joy, can also reflect my sorrow so profoundly.

Marge, thanks for the bump!  I like to try to bump at least one of someone else's poems back to page one, per day.  This forum is so active that a lot of talented poets miss out on having their work seen.  Then, of course, there are the REALLY talented ones (are your ears burning yet?) who stay on page one forever, cuz people are constantly responding  to their posts.

Lone Wolf - I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling this way, my friend.  Hope that your sorrow is brief!  I'm also glad that my poem touched you.  I have found that shared grief is usually much easier to deal with, than when we feel we are alone in our suffering...

Thanks again to all of you for your wonderful words, and the emotions behind them!

Troy, I agree with your wife, this is excellent! I'm sure we can all relate to feeling like this from time to time. Very well expressed!
