Today I spoke
With a sparrow

I was in the park
Just doodling on the bench
Just sitting there

He came down
Bold and bright
Even cheeky
Softly on the arm of the seat
Glance darting, feathers ruffling
Just there…. hopping

His eye full of life
Caught mine
Holding my stare for several seconds
‘O k’ I said ‘tell me sparrow’
……..I didn’t know his name
‘Tell what it’s like to be so free
Have no worries, have no stress
No chores, no errands, no demands?

He looked puzzled at my question
He just hopped closer eyes blinking
‘Come on ‘I said ‘you can tell me
Just whisper… it’ll be our secret’.
‘What’s it like to be able to
Go were you want, to fly, to sit in a tree and watch
The world go by?

Looking even more confused
The sparrow became suddenly alert
And in a flurry was gone

Searching for my friend
My glance wondered to the nearby tree
And saw the outline
Of the grey silent shape
Of the hawk

Oh Dear! I thought

Jon Mewett

Hi everyone just called in from the corner pub.

Great poem, Jon! An original take on 'the grass is always greener' syndrome! Well done!
