The Painting The painting had hung for years in this spot, purchased for the light that shown like a kind of reverence. She squinted into its radiance and stepped inside the landscape where she could smell damp earth and hear leaves rustle with lizard-tail scurry. The sun tinged the side of the adobe building auburn and cast long shadows from the spreading eucalyptus tree across the door. A man in a long cloak gazing from the open door was stained with the color of the sun across his face to holy. The sky was white, and blue brushed the trunk of the birch tree. Two woman talking together in hushed voices, feathered sound across the stone walk-way. Their faces were unoccupied until she closed the distance and could see the pencil outline. From all around she could hear the hum of the past, the center of life where the hammering of nails into the mission’s cross was pure and hope-filled, and so placed at the peak in simple symbol it humbled the sky. Something was hidden behind sea green leaves, mottled like moss and swamp to almost black and as she rubbed her eyes and backed away back into the room where the painting hung, it rang sweet and sure and real. |

My gosh.. This one takes several reads, Martie.. To become one with a painting - and to make that happen through words... That's quite a feat, my friend... I'm duly impressed, I am... .. This is wonderful.. [This message has been edited by Nan (edited 03-19-2000).] |

WOW! Martie, this is fantastic! As soon as I realized that you were 'going into' the picture I was reminded that my youngest daughter does that too! She's been doing that since she was little! Daydreaming herself into the scene! I think I will try it! You've made is sound so exciting! Denise |

Martie, Martie, Martie Shaking my head in disbelief. You take me to a place I've never been, paint a picture more real than the real, make me a part of it, then meerly step back, as though nothing unusual happened. I'm going to dub you the "Virtual Reality Poet". What is there left for you to write? I guess we'll have to wait til tomorrow to find out. I am stunned Liz |

You have described exactly how I feel when I read one of your poems. I walk into them, am consumed by them, experience the pleasure of them, taste their flavor and then, after the final line, return to my chair and rejoin the world. Beautiful work, Martie. |

I used go "into" pictures too,...when I was younger. This is absolutely amazing how you put that experience into words! Beautiful and just absolutely amazing! -molly aka sam Fleeting World "Thus shall ye think of all this fleeting world: A star at dawn, a bubble in a stream; A flash of lightning in a summer cloud, A flickering lamp, a phantom, and a dream." -from the Diamond Sutra, translated by : A.
