The Golden Locket

He handed her the little box
And brushed aside her golden locks
A birthday present wrapped in blue
With velvet bow of lighter hue

She looked into his smiling eyes
Held to her heart the small surprise
Then opened up the cherished gift
Much greater than she could have wished

A golden locket on a chain
A father’s love the gift contained
Inside the heart two pictures placed
She and her father, face to face

He placed the chain around her neck
And said some words she didn’t expect
My love for you is in this heart
And from it I will never part

She wore the necklace year to year
Through childish play and teenage tear
And on her blessed wedding day
She touched it as she knelt to pray

Her locket held the love she’d known
The tenderness he'd always shown
He promised he would never part
From love within the golden heart

The day he died her spirit cried
Her love would never be denied
She opened up the golden clasp
And placed the heart within his grasp

The locket glimmered in a way
Just as his eyes did on that day
She said my love is in this heart
And from it you will never part

She bought a locket made of gold
Two tiny pictures it would hold
She brushed aside her daughter's locks
And handed her the tiny box

Through golden heart of precious worth
Is passed the greatest gift on earth
From age to age, from heart to heart
From children's love we never part

Liz:  Oh Wow!..I'd sure like to be the one with such a locket but I'm sure all that love could never ever fit in something so small...This locket must have been designed by Fabergé..

I love the way I look in your eyes, I'm just me tho'...
We are all works in progress, no?

Cindy, there's not another soul on earth who would have thought of that response. If you hadn't signed it, I would have known who it was from. You are a delight! Thanks

Lovebug,
You are my most important reader, and if you liked the poem, I am smiling. I hope you will attempt more structured verse. It kind of sings. And never stop writing in free form. You have a talent to be envied.
Thanks, dear
Liz

Hoot, I am moved by your response

Sy, I am even prouder to be your friend

Claire, You are so sweet and kind. Thanks

Marge, Most of yours are in my treasure chest. Thanks

Elizabeth,
you never cease to amaze me. . . the depth of your emotion and the power of your words always speaks directly to my heart. . . this was a wonderful, powerful poem. . .would that we all know love like this at least once in our lives. . .

The challenge poem that you asked for is done, it's called "The Black Rose" and I hope that you enjoy it. . . if I can ever be even half the writer that you are someday, I will have suceeded in my quest. . .

This may seem odd... but I have those ceremonial lockets.. only no daughters~
They are for my sons to give to their daughters (should they have any)~
My sons frequently ask to see "their" lockets~
They are such touching gifts~
Your poem was so beautiful~

Corrine, Thank you, I would describe your poetry the same way

Martie, You have a heart of gold filled with love. No need for a locket.

Sven, From one who writes verses filled with love, this is appreciated. I loved your Black Rose, what imagination. However it was the other Elizabeth who posed the challenge

Marie, Your granddaughters will love them. Thank you fot your response

Denise, Thank you, dear

Balladeer, Thank you for the wonderful compliment

Julie, Glad you liked this poem. Thanks

Suthern, Tears come from a loving heart. Thank you

Liz
