For lack of something better to do, I set about clearing a room or two. I came across an old valentine, some empty jewel boxes that once held love, a note from class written to you, lots of forgotten mementos and pictures too. Guess I'll never know why you left them behind. What shall I do with all these memories? They hardly seem mine. An empty heart shaped box of candy, beads and buckles, old socks and shoes, dried flowers saved, and letters written, all gone to hell and us with them. Times like this make me wish I'd picked over everything and took that first train leaving. I found an old locked box I had to break to open, some crayons strangely there to find, vials of perfume unwanted, left behind, an old broken watch with a different sense of time, no reason anymore to come around, all trace of you is gone. |

This is sad and yet it's not...moving on by cleaning out is a good way to get rid of old memories.... good poem. |

Brian, I think this perhaps my favorite of all your poems that you have shared with me in the two years we have known each other. You are a talented writer and it's nice to see you here |
