      A Soft place to Fall

        So many years,
             we let slip by
        taking two roads
             not knowing why
        I need you now
             soon making a call
        tonight I look for
             a soft place to fall

        there were heartaches
             from lovers past
        looking for meaning
             none there to last
        in you I knew
             and always saw
        a warm heart and
             a soft place to fall

        didn't mean to hurt you
             then so long ago
        feelings that swept me
             unsure to know
        you knew me best
             it seems after all
        coming to you for
             a soft place to fall

        you're always waiting
             with tender embrace
        always a smile
             upon your face
        in my eyes I see
             you standing so tall
        there to give me
             a soft place to fall

        when nights are over
             and comes the dawn
        before the daylight
             you know I'll be gone
        until the next time
             when I make that call
        when again needing
             a soft place to fall

It seems as though you have found a very soft place to fall.

This reads very beautiful.

Oh, Danny Boy~

How beautiful, tender and touching.
You take my breath clean away with this one.
You romantic, you.
Love it ... just love it.
May open arms be there when you need
'a soft place to fall.'

Perhaps you've realized this person is more than simply a soft place to fall?  I used to have someone in my life that I thought of as a "soft place to fall",...though I didn't fully realize that I viewed him in exactly this manner until he was tired of being my "soft place to FALL" instead of my "soft place to STAY"...just a thought...your poem made me remember...
     Beautiful poem....

Danny, so melancholy in its way yet romantic. Very beautiful and touching. May you always have a soft place to fall.

this part keeps running through my head...

         you knew me best
             it seems after all
        coming to you for
             a soft place to fall

It makes it seem more like a safe place to fall.

I am truly honored by the many responses to this poem. Too many to name and thank, just know, all of you, that I appreciate the time you took to read my work.  There are so many beautiful poems posted each day and to have such response to one of mine is incredibly special and inspiring.
Thanks to each of you, especially Hoot and Shelley for responding twice and to Janet Marie for making a discovery.
Danny

Danny - WOW!  This is the first of your poems that I am aware of having read, and I wonder what took me so long!  Your gift is truly a treasure - thanks so much for sharing it with the rest of us!

I, too, have had someone in my life who was a  "soft place to fall."  But, in contrast to some of the previous comments, she and I were  actually just incredibly good friends, neither of us wanting more than that.  In fact, when she fell in love with a very good man and he asked her to marry him, she asked my permission!

Thanks again for sharing your beautiful gift!

Hi, this is beautiful particularly because it can be applied to so many relationships. I decided to send it to my boyfriend to tell him he was my 'soft place'. Thanks for creating such a perfect gift to give.
