He never speaks of his first wife, Who died in '64. And Sarah never seems to care That he's been wed before. But sometimes when he thinks of Ann And what her love had been, He feels a tugging in his breast That both ways seems a sin. To worship her beside his wife Seems disloyal and wrong, But memory of his first young love Has warmed his heart so long. Sarah has surely saved his life, His heart is at her call. And yet at times between their kiss The lips of Ann will fall. He lives in this uneasy way Until, like you and I, He finds himself upon the bed Where he knows he must die, And still the feelings in his soul Are so mixed in confusion That he can find no words to say To make a true conclusion. Then Sarah says with her last kiss That soothes his spirit home, "I'm blessed that Ann's already there To keep you till I come." |

Well, ONE of you ladies is responsible for this, because you posted a poem about a dying man back in January which belatedly caused this one, and I wish my memory would credit which of you it was. |

This skillfully constructed piece of writing is perfect...in its simplicity, poignancy and sentiment. Just lovely. Thank you... ~ Claire |

Ted: This reminded me of when someone asked my father what he missed most about my mother and he answered, "the wine". The inquisitor said, "I didn't know you were a drinker," and he replied, "I did say Whine, didn't I? W-h-i-n-e." Back to your poem, an awkward line for me was this one "That both ways seems" otherwise, a fine job. bboog |

Great job Ted, reading this makes me imagine that I am actually in that situation So many times do we have to battle conflicting emotions, not just in this way, but too many others to mention... |
