Mama's China Hutch Mama didn't own much in the many years she did live But Mama owned far greater than money could ever give For Mama left us with treasures worth much more than gold Stored away in her china hutch, as much as it could hold Great-Grandma's best china with its chips along the side Was given to her daughter when she became a bride Then passed along to my Mama when she married my Dad It wasn't fancy china, but it was the best that they had Tucked back in the corner, colors slightly faded by the dust Sitting safely on the top shelf in a place that Mama did trust Is the bouquet of flowers from each daughter on her wedding day A quiet reminder of a new beginning as we each went our separate way Back behind the many pictures of faces aged by the hand of time Sits Mama's most prized possession that one day will be mine It's pages gently curling from the many years that it was used From looks it appears mistreated, abandoned and abused But looks can be deceiving, for this book held a special place As Mama sat and read it with a peaceful look upon her face Now I read those cherished stories as my Mama use to do Understanding the Bible that she read through and through One shelf holds tiny knick-knacks made with love by little hands Clay figures, paper roses and some held together by rubber bands Mama proudly displayed them as her greatest pieces of art Cause each one was made with the love from a tiny heart Yes, Mama left more treasures than any one could really know And to this day they are displayed where each one of them will show When I'm missing Mama all I have to do is visit her china hutch And take a look at all her treasures that she loved so much |

Wow Deb...I couldda said this almost word for word....(not nearly as expertly or sweetly for sure)....but if this is a true story, it's identical to my mom's......from the hutch to the bible to the love.....thanks for making me think.... |

Deb: This is beautiful! Your mother knew what constitutes true treasures... and has obviously passed that understanding on to you. What a lovely tribute! |

Thanks Toe & Suthern! I'm extremely blessed to still have my Mama who does indeed have a packed china hutch full of memories. She's my inspiration for trying to live a good decent life & fulfill my dreams of writing. |

Deb Lynne- A beautiful touch of nostalgia. My children feel the same way about my cedar chest. Every little 'trinket' or 'thing' they ever gave me is tenderly tucked away in the chest. I knew my one son had fallen in love the night he asked if he could bring a girl over to 'plunder' through the cedar chest with him. They just became engaged this last month. Something about those memories. Thanks for sharing. ~*Marger*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ [email protected] |
