Love Letters < !signature-->the sunlight glints on snowy hair as gnarled fingers clutch an ancient wood box her feet shuffle on a mossy path soon she finds her steps leading her to the garden the one she remembers so well the one where she lost her heart that starlit summer night, so long ago the air heavy and fragrant with the scent of nature leaving her senses overwhelmed in memory and a turmoil of emotions regret and happiness pain and joy brushing the leaves off of a time-worn bench she settles herself down staring into the scenery around her not seeing what is there but what was before her hands run over the box so lovingly, almost hesitatingly, she touches the lock almost afraid to see what's inside soon, the pull, the connection, the undying passion could not be denied any longer and she slowly opens the lid as a musty smell wafts up to her nose old paper, old flowers, old love in perfect order from the first tentative note to the last impassioned plea all there all reminding her of her loss and her gain pressing the letters to her cheek she whispers 'soon I will be with you again my love' closing the memories away in the box visions of war and carnage searing her heart they called him a 'hero' she called him her life he gave his life so nobly but even still, she hurts even still, she is angry for their life cut short for the babies they never shared for the joys and sorrows for the history they never made yet in all her pain, she stands amazed by the power of the love they shared 50 years have come and gone and her love still remains true his ring on her finger his voice in her heart she settles back on the bench closes her eyes and relives their first kiss couting the hours and minutes until they are together once more "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." ~Eleanor Roosevelt~ [This message has been edited by X Angel (edited 02-04-2000).] |

This is such a special poem, and the fact that I know an elderly lady that lost her husband as a young man in the War, and was having a child by him at the time, made this all the more vivid. You have written it with such great feeling and realism, I feel I am present there with her as she opens the box. |

This is all so sad that she lost the man that she loved yet there is still hope because she has not lost the love they shared. I enjoyed the part when she softly whispered to the man she still remembered as if it was yesterday and still Loved with all her heart "soon I will be with you again my Love". Isn't that why love is so special. Thats the beauty of love. James |

Wow...}X{Angel}X{, this piece is so very sublime, frightening in it's beauty and simplicity, a poignant story of undying love amidst profound loss. What a way to make a come-back. It is at times like this, when such imagery breathes within my mind, that I am thankful for the imagination God has so granted me. Thank you for bringing that forth so simply. ![]() Alicat, the awed Persnikitty As I sit here dimly thinking Watching modem lights a-blinking Churning out poetic hash.
