“Hey, cowboy! Could you spare a buck”? The voice was weak and hoarse- I turned and saw a tired old man, His face lined with remorse.... “I ain’t a bum, or wan’t I guess- I didn’t used to be... But fate was cruel, with razor spurs She broke the heart in me”. “I rode the circuit..lemme see- I quit in sixty three? Take twelve from that, that’s fifty-one, You never heard of me. Boy, I was good...I almost won Three years in a row- I’d draw a dink that wouldn’t buck Or spur a bit too slow.. I guess it was in sixty, That I met Mary Jane... And, son, from when I saw her, I never was the same. I loved her, boy, I’ll tell the world And Mary Jane loved me- We planned our wedding for the Spring- How happy we would be. I rode my stock in Houston- We loaded up to go... My next stop Amarillo.. A long hard drive, you know?.. We rode and talked the night away I never even dreamed That I was getting drowsy Until I heard her scream. I started, and I jerked the wheel But I was far too late... The tearing steel, the breaking glass- The rest I can’t relate... It broke me up, I didn’t wake For nearly fourteen days- I didn’t know the details Till she was in the grave. The money? I sure need a drink- It helps to stop the dreams... I tell you, boy, I still awake From hearing Mary’s screams. Why bless you, son, that’s twenty bucks”! The old man turned away- And disappeared into the crowd- I tell you, to this day... I close my eyes, and see his face- The abject misery.... And raise my eyes up to the skies "Thank God it wasn’t me". Visit My Home Page http://www.geocities.com/montcogunslinger/HomePage.html |

This is a heartbreaking situation GS, and only you would have the soul to put it into such beautiful poetry!!! Open arms can be the most fragile in the world... |
