The Inscription

I carved your name,
in a heart,
with the words
"I love you"
in the rough bark of a tree.

The days passed,
spring turned to summer,
summer to fall,
fall to winter,
winter to spring,
one year led on to another,
and yet the letters remained.
The trees bark wrapped them lovingly;
dark moss blanketed the groves;
the sun faded the letters;
but still, they endured.

Oh, how that inscription
weathered the storms...
I wish I could say the same
for our love.

 I can live with the idea
That we are merely actors
Playing a part
But I do wish
Whoever is writing my script
Would learn to use
A few more Happy Endings
~Javan

It is strange isn't it, the lasting symbols that inanimate objects can hold.  The muse has found you I see.  Great poem!

Excellent thought placed on paper, Ruth. The chiseled always outlasts the chiseler.

hoot owl, your last lines forced a heartfelt "ouch, that hurts" from me.  (And so did Balladeer's last comment, in another way!)

Ruth, this is simply beautiful, very sad and heart wrenching, especially the last 4 lines.
*hugs* my friend.

Ruth this was excellent as I find all your work to be that way!  I wish it could stay as long as it does on the tree too!  Sometimes if they could be like the tree, shade you and cover you and never fight with you or decieve you or hurt you!  Wouldn't it be nice...but ya know...they could say the same thing bout us too... =o)  Excellent work my friend!

Hoot-
I smile with tender remembering at this.

In the trunk of a grapefruit tree
one heart
two names
growing deeper each year

On a sycamore
one heart
two names
exfoliating bark
removed all traces
of the inscription of love

Fabulous memories invoked.
Thank you.

Sad the way live sometimes unfold'
From time to time we losing our hold
Well written but so sad within the heart
The heart that carries the name of two
But remember this, he loved you too.

A nice poem but so darn sad I'm caused a tear to flow.
Hugs and Love, always
