Few weeks ago we got the message that my sister's eldest granddaughter (age 13) has been diagnosed with a malicious bone cancer. It's in her leg, just below the knee. Long story short: she's going into hospital tomorrow to get a bone scan to see if it has spread. Then she will get chemo and then a leg saving operation and then chemo again.

There's no history of this type of cancer in our family.

13 years old, just starting her life and that's why I'll never understand the Why.

We won't tell Mommy Muys, she wouldn't survive such a message.

Titia, darling, I truly know your grief.

Only you will know Mummy Muys' ability to deal with such a reaction.

I know if you kept it from me, I would be very upset that I was not allowed to give my prayers to this child of "mine".

I will pray for this child, and your family.

Love, K

@ Sunshine: I know it's terrible not to tell mom, but I know what it will do to her, I've seen it when my eldest sister's husband died last year. She still keeps calling me sometimes to ask me if I know that Roel died and then she's all depressed. Somehow she keeps reliving those moments. So when the husband of my other sister died, we decided not to tell her.

Okay honey. I've been in your place; it's hard to know how and who to protect; we all do our best. Sending prayers.

My sorrows are with you and her, Dutchie...and I will never understand the Why, either.

How sorry I am to learn of the cancer in this young lady.  May the good Lord be her guiding light throughout the ordeal.

One day we will understand the dark places in the beautiful tapestry God is weaving us into.
For now, all we can do is trust that HE knows and does what's best for each of us.

Bless each of you.

Maura is getting chemo at the moment for 4 days in a row and then for another 10 weeks before they operate the leg. Good message was that there were no mestases in her lungs. But what I heard from my sis is that they're going to remove her ovaries just for precaution, so she won't be able to have children.

Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Fingers crossing. God always has a way of putting good people in line with children who need parents. If this child will be willing, in the future, to adopt, that child will probably find no greater love.

My prayers for Maura are on their way. May science find new healing methods for this terrible illness.

Love and trust.

Update on Maura:

She had her operation last Monday. They could hold the knee for now, the cancer hadn't reached it yet. I don't know exactly what they did, but in any case she has a pin and a plate in her leg. It was an 8 hour operation. Later on they discovered on the scan that one of the screws was screwed up (sticking out a bit) and that would be bothering her later, so she has to go under again next Monday to fix that.

She lost her hair, but got a beautiful wig. She's doing great, considering all she's been going through. Now she's not allowed to walk and has to sit in a wheelchair for one whole year, hoping there will be no inflammation, because when that happens, her leg has to go.

Let's hope it will all work out for the best.

I am thinking of Maura and wishing on the sun for her health (no stars at this time of year).

She went into hospital few days ago again for the X time to get another chemo for four days. She's a strong girl. But it isn't over yet for a long time. We'll just have to wait and hope.

Titia, Owl informed me of your posts and that she knew that I would like to respond ~ which I most assuredly.
Years ago my husband's nephew had cancer of the bow in his leg and went through what your grandniece is now facing. It was a very trying time for us all. Thanks be to God his leg was eventually spared and he went on to be a champion rower and was later the best university coach in the province. Ofttimes the challenges we are given actually make us stronger. With a great aunt such as yourself, I would wager that she has some of your mettle.
Sending prayers of healing, courage and strength,
Linda
