Well, folks, it has been a long ride since last March when the economy and "change" of the nation interrupted my life...but "long" can be subjective as 9 months can also mean a baby... [which we are expecting, as a grandchild, in April-ish ![]() Anyway... I have applied every week since the large layoff to find a new position. Guess what? People, companies, etc., don't want my age group any more. I'm in the "old age cycle"...young enough to be hired, but old enough to be too expensive. Ha! They never ask if you will negotiate, they just stamp you as "aged"...and if I were a great cheese or marvelous wine, that would be fine with me. In that light, I'm pleased to share with you the fact that I vacillated sending in my resume to a "new" magazine that will be highlighting the Salina area, which has been recently designated to be "Sunflower Living". I sent in my resume on that very last day of its appearance in the paper...and they called me! This slick magazine will depict life and style in the area of mostly mid-to north-west area of my city - from where I reside to Nebraska and over to Colorado, while not getting quite down to Wichita. ![]() So I will be a contributing writer and while I may be able to pitch stories, I will also be contracted out to write about what they ask for, and given their perimeters of the specific story. I'm smiling! I can DO this! I'm quite excited, and sharing it with all of you during the Christmas season is basically sharing my best Christmas present in a long time! |

Not quite down to Wichita? Sounds like a rough part of the country and probably has some scruffy characters running about. I think I would stay north and west of Salina. Seriously, that is great news, I wish you well in your new literary endeavor and may a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year be but a great send-off to 2010. |

Tim, isn't "scruffy" what Kansas is for the most part? I can do scruffy. Merry Christmas, my friend. Let me know if you have any positions down in your area...I'll commute! |

Fantastic news. Congratulations. It will keep you on your toes and ALIVE! I was just let go after twenty years, but I was ready for it. I will be 78 in February and I would have stayed until I was 80 I know, because I kept procrastinating about leaving. I was very unhappy because two years ago another company took over the contract and they cut out every benefit we had. Along with the pay scale going down, we did not even have one sick day. I cut down to four nights and then to three nights but I sounded off over one more indignity and my manager suggested that since I was so unhappy I should turn in my resignation. I said I would not do that and if they wanted to fire me they would have to do it. So she fired me. LOL It was just the push I needed. I could have fought it as I had no previous misdemeanors on my record for all those years but I felt it was just the push I needed to get out. Enjoy the new adventure. latarrival |

That is super-slick cool! You can do it. We have faith in you, just make sure you keep faith in yourself! Don't forget, you have more books to write too. ![]() ----- I just hired a new employee this week. She is in her late forties. To me, it had nothing to do with age, and everything to do with ability. Sadly, when you have hiring managers who are not confident in their own abilities, they tend to get intimidated by those with more experience. In other words -- you're too good for them. ![]() |

Linda, I guess my excitment preceded the fact that the magazine is only a quarterly...and as Rick Bragg admits, we're "not in a well paid arena..." or words to that affect. But still... ![]() No, Larry, it can't get better than that...unless you're a very well known author and people are clamoring for your next word! Hugs, my friend, and Merry Christmas to you and yours! Late, from your wisdom to my heart, are your words. I had no idea of your stage in life, nor all that you've been through but I am so pleased you've shared it with us who ain't you yet. ![]() ![]() No, Mys...it's a quarterly, and I'll work from the home front. Good enough for me. You can follow this link to see the sort of magazine I'll be writing for... http://www.sunflowerpub.com/ They don't want me in Lawrence...they want me here in my adopted state...going out and about...and let's see, if I can get my tax guy in on this, he'll tell me what I can write off re: lunches, etc.... Heh,... Thank you, Maureen...yes, it will be getting assigned jobs and those that I might pitch to them, "if" I am interested... won't be much in $$$, but just the fact that it will be fun and a reason to gad about...Wahoo! nope, 'Deer, they don't do folds, except for sheets of 600 count quality, I'm sure. ![]() But thanks for the smiles! Kacy, so good to see your name! Hugs to you, and Merry Christmas, sweetie! MartieSis, from your lips to God's ear...I'm covered now for sure! Love you, Sissie...have a wonderful Christmas! Sue, thank you so much for your wonderful words. I'm excited to get onto this first project. I just hope that I will be able to share that magazine with all of you if it goes online like their others do. It may take awhile, I'm still learning a lot about the organization! Christopherson...Yes, dear, I know about what I need to do. It's strange being unemployed after so many decades of employment, when the decision wasn't yours to retire just yet. One keeps waiting for the rug to be pulled out again from underneath their feet...not a good feeling. As I mentioned, I vacillated sending in my resume for this position because I was skittish about not getting it...and then I got it. I've been just that skittish about getting back into my writing on the 2nd and 3rd novels in progress because "what if I'm hired to go back to work?" I know the what ifs need to be resolved finally...I'm not getting younger. Although, my dear son, you've made me feel younger by your great comment. I'm glad you see what you see your way...that needs to be published... ![]() Love, Mom Ruth, dearheart, I'm lucky to have them! Margherita, as one of the very first people to order up my first novel, I have to thank YOU for the happies....you've always been one of those folk who keep me going! Thank you, Denise....I want you and yours to dig out from under the snow [we still have quite a bit on the ground ourselves] so enjoy your white Christmas and smile through all of it - we're survivors! |

I'm trying Karilea, I'm trying. I only almost fell 3 times on my way into work. Never have been steady on my feet, even under the best of circumstances..weak ankles, I think. Slip slidin' away! But thank God I didn't fall and break anything yet! I've done that in the past (two broken elbows, ten years apart), which I think makes me overly cautious, which probably makes my stability worse than it would be otherwise! And of course the city hasn't cleared our streets yet, they've just done the major roads. They probably won't do any more than they have, as usual. They spent all their manpower getting the stadiums cleared out for the weekend games, I suppose. We live in one of the highest taxed areas in the country and we never get much back for it. Democrats....grrrr! Okay, I'm done ranting for now! ![]() |

I'm happy to share with all of you that while I cannot yet reveal my story, I have several interviews set up and am extremely excited about this project! I had to wait until the New Year began to begin my phone calls, etc., but OMG, all is falling into places and shapes and reams of dreams...we are all excited about what could be just "an ordinary piece" of a small bit of journalism...BUT...from the sources of folk I've talked to, I've already started the gray matter into thinking of other stories... Heh... Sunshine is smiling...and although I cannot change the weather predictions right now to dismiss the cold, snow and wind stuff that's going around, do know that ![]() WARMTH, LIGHT and HUGS, Poets!
